Based on the successful novel – and first of a trilogy – by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games tells the tale of Katniss Everdeen, who must fight for her life in the annual titular event, the key piece of entertainment for the post-apocalyptic future America. Lionsgate is banking on this franchise becoming the next big young adult hit as the Twilight series winds down, and with the talent involved, combined with our fondness for the books (the first two, anyway), we have high hopes for this spring release.

Summit Entertainment Might Accept Lionsgate Merger Deal As Early As This Week

Merger talks between Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment has been going as far back as during fall of 2008 before ‘Twilight’ was released. However, according to Variety, while previous merger talks fell through, this time Summit Entertainment might accept the buyout offers from either Lionsgate or Colony Capital as early as this week.

Privately held Summit, facing the end of the “Twilight” franchise this year, could decide as early as this week whether to accept competing buyout offers from Lionsgate and Miramax owner Colony Capital. Though the talks have been going on for several weeks, spokespeople for the three companies have not confirmed any of the negotiations and have had no comment.

People familiar with the situation have indicated the bids for Summit are in $350 million to $400 million range and noted that a deal could take many more weeks to close. As a public company, Lionsgate would be required to clear several hurdles to complete such a transaction — which isn’t expected to include issuing significant amounts of stock or debt.

Summit’s coming into 2012 with its fourth “Twilight” pic having racked up a stellar $273 million domestically and another $362 million internationally. “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2,” due to open Nov. 16, is likely to perform in the same range.

Over the past five years, Summit co-chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger have transformed Summit from a foreign sales company into a full-service production and distribution studio. Their timing has been fortunate with Summit announcing a $1 billion financing deal in April 2007 — a transaction that would not have been possible a few months later as the financial markets began melting down.

In March, Summit Entertainment closed a $750 million financing deal — a $550 million term loan and a $200 million revolving line of credit — that allowed the company to unshackle itself from itself from some of its debt, increase feature production and run day-to-day operations. It also paid a cash distribution to its largest investors, including Participant Media and private equity fund Rizvi Traverse Management.

If either the Lionsgate or Colony deals go through, Friedman and Wachsberger are expected to remain in some kind of top-level exec capacities in the merged entity. Summit and Lionsgate have had discussions about uniting going back as far as the fall of 2008, just before the bow of the first “Twilight” pic. Colony, which completed a $663 million buyout of Miramax from Disney in December 2010, emerged as a possible Summit bidder in November.

‘The Hunger Games’ Listed In MTV 2012 Movie Wish List

MTV has compiled a list where their staff speaks out about their hopes for 2012 movies and ‘The Hunger Games’ is included in the list.

“The Hunger Games” Takes Out “Twilight”
The end of the “Twilight” film franchise is bittersweet. We’ll miss our favorite vampires and werewolves, but 2012 marks the arrival of a new franchise that deserves just as much attention and adoration as Stephenie Meyer’s fangtastic fantasyland. “The Hunger Games” is not “Twilight” and shouldn’t ever be compared as such, but it deserves that blockbuster status. This is a story about survival, self-reliance and discovery, with a female protagonist who is strong, resilient, independent, intelligent and real. In short, Suzanne Collins’ creation has everything modern youth-targeted fiction lacks. I pray to the movie powers for Gary Ross’ big-screen adaptation to be the biggest success story of the year and that the fan fervor for the “Games” doubles that of “Twilight.” – Kara Warner

I have got to say I totally agree with Kara Warner from MTV and now that we are already in the year of 2012, let’s all hope the odds will certainly be ever in favor for ‘The Hunger Games’ movie franchise and the world will be watching ‘The Hunger Games’. I know I certainly will when ‘The Hunger Games’ lands in Singapore on 22 March 2012.

Josh Hutcherson In January 2012 British Edition Of Glamour Magazine

Our friends over at Hunger Games Indonesia stumbled on a short mention of Josh Hutcherson, who will play Peeta Mellark in ‘The Hunger Games’, where he was ranked 3rd as MONITOR “The Stars to watch in 2012” in British edition of January 2012 issue of Glamour magazine.

In case you find the picture too blurry, here’s what Glamour magazine has to say about Josh Hutcherson:

The Hunger Games is the first chapter of a Trilogy that’s set to be huge, but it’s Josh who’ll grab your attention as Peeta in Part 1. While Twilight had Team Edward and Team Jacob, THG will introduce a new divide: Team Gale (Liam Hemsworth) and Team Peeta (Josh). Both are vying for the heart of Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss in this sci-fi extravaganza, out in March, Josh also joins Chris Hemsworth and Isabel Lucas in the remake of Red Dawn.

‘The Hunger Games’ Featured In January Issue Of Empire Magazine 2012 Spring Preview

In the January 2012 issue of Empire Magazine, ‘The Hunger Games’ is featured as a part of the 2012 preview for movies released in Spring.

Here’s a transcript of the magazine article provided by HG Girl On Fire.

The early hype portrayed this adaption of Suzanne Collins’ trilogy is another Twilight. There is, after all a sort of love triangle between lead character Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss and two male friends, Josh Hutcherson’s Peeta and Liam Hemsworth’s Gale. The story’s told from a teenage girl’s POV, and the books are a phenomenon. Look closer, however, and it’s nearer to Battle Royale, with teens randomly chosen to battle to the death in a technologically advanced arena as a means of keeping the wider populace in line. Only one can emerge victorious.

In other words, there’s previous little time for moping about with wolves or mooning over sparkly vampires. Lawrence’s Katniss is as tough as they come, an expert in hunting and archery before she even hits the Games, but she’s up against kids who are bigger and tougher, and who have, in some cases, been training for years to take part. Says Lenny Kravitz, who appears as Katniss’ secretly supportive stylist, Cinna, “It’s great storytelling, these kids being put in this complex situation of survival. I was on the edge of my seat, so if you’re 12, putting yourself in her place is completely captivating.”

For Lawrence, it’s not a million miles from her Oscar-nominated role in Winter’s Bone: tough girl, impoverished background, fierce determination to protect her younger siblings no matter what the cost. “Gary (Ross, Director) cast Jennifer, and i think he had in mind that she’s a really strong personality with an unusually keen sense of humour,” says Woody Harrelson, who plays Games survivor Haymitch, charged with mentoring Katniss and Peeta through their ordeal. “There’s something in her eyes that you can tell she’s a survivor, even though she’s young. She just has that in her eyes – and that’s Katniss.”

This is also a story on a much bigger scale than Twilight. Katniss’ journey takes her across the former US from her Appalachian home to the Capitol, somewhere in the Rockies. And while her home District is backward and impoverished, the Captiol is extravagant and outrageous, with the sort of haircuts and colours you’d usually only expect to see in The Wizard of Oz. “The sets are incredible, just amazing!” enthuses Harrelson. “Sometimes you don’t notice the hair and make-up as much in a movie because it kind of blends in, but particularly in the Captiol there were some wild concepts. Pretty much every aspect of this production had the best people in the business, and it was just a pleasure to see what they came up with.”

Which is not to say that it’s all pomades and couture. For Katniss to survive, 23 other kids will have to die, including the very sympathetic Peeta. There will be a lot of death but not, Harrelson assures us, gratuitous levels of gloom or violence. “I don’t see it as all that dark. It’s exciting, but not dark compared to a lot of what I see. It’s PG-13 dark. The death isn’t emphasized. It’s more about this incredible girl.”
