The New York Times: Do It Yourself Mockingjays Now Possible?

Is it possible that we can actually create our own Mockingjays?

The New York Times explores the possibility of this happening in this interesting article.

The Hunger Games Official Teaser Movie Poster

Setting aside whether jays could actually breed with mockingbirds — this is a kind of fairy tale, after all — the choice of species rings true. Jays, along with crows and ravens, belong to a highly intelligent group of birds called the corvids. And jays are naturally thieves and spies, keeping track of where other jays hide food, for example, to raid it later. Mockingbirds, of course, have a fantastic ability to mimic other birds’ songs. Coincidentally, or perhaps not, Thomas Jefferson, a lover of both birds and liberty, kept a pet mockingbird in the White House.

I asked Joan Slonczewski, a microbiologist and science fiction writer at Kenyon College in Ohio, about her take on the mockingjay. Dr. Slonczewski, whose recent books include a text and a novel, “The Highest Frontier,” teaches a course called “Biology in Science Fiction.” The tools needed to modify organisms are already widely dispersed in industry and beyond. “Now anybody can do a start-up,” she said.

That’s no exaggeration. Do-it-yourself biology is growing. The technology to copy pieces of DNA can be bought on eBay for a few hundred dollars, as Carl Zimmer reported in The New York Times in March. As to where D.I.Y. biology may lead, Freeman Dyson, a thinker at the Institute for Advanced Study known for his provocative ideas, presented one view in 2007 in The New York Review of Books. He envisioned the tools of biotechnology spreading to everyone, including pet breeders and children, and leading to “an explosion of diversity of new living creatures.”

Eventually, he wrote, the mixing of genes by humans will initiate a new stage in evolution. Along the way, if he is right, the world may have more than its share of do-it-yourself mockingjays.

Suzanne Collins: One of the Most Powerful Moms of 2012

Suzanne Collins

To celebrate Mother’s Day, Working Mother compiled a list of women who have made (and are still making) a major impact on various fields such as social networking, technology, showbiz, etc. Our beloved Suzanne Collins has made the list as the Most Powerful Mom: Children’s Literature Star!

Suzanne Collins

Most Powerful Mom: Children’s Literature Star

Author

Children: Son, 17, Daughter, 12

Suzanne Collins seems ubiquitous these days, with the kid-lit mantle proverbially passed to her by J.K. Rowling. Her bestselling book series, The Hunger Games trilogy, is still breaking records; and now there’s a blockbuster movie inspired by the first book—with more to come. Collins began her career working for children’s television, ultimately  becoming the head writer for the PBS show Clifford’s Puppy Days. She also wrote children’s books including The Underland Chronicles and When Charlie McButton Lost Power.

Congratulations to Suzanne for making the list!

The entire Hunger Games Singapore staff would also like to wish all mothers a very happy and joyous Mother’s Day!

BREAKING: Lionsgate To Offer Francis Lawrence To Direct ‘Catching Fire’

After a little more than a week of speculations, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Lionsgate will be making an official offer to Francis Lawrence (Water For Elephants, I Am Legend, Constantine) to direct ‘The Hunger Games’ sequel, ‘Catching Fire’.

Francis Lawrence is not related in any to ‘The Hunger Games’ franchise lead, Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Katniss Everdeen.

Sources say Lawrence will receive an official offer Thursday afternoon. If he accepts and a deal can be worked out, he will replaceGary Ross, who directed the hugely successful first installment of the franchise.

The hunt has been fast and furious, with the field narrowing down to Lawrence, director of I Am Legend and Water for Elephants, and Bennett Miller, who helmed the Oscar-nominated Brad Pitt baseball movie Moneyball. Both directors met with the studio Thursday, according to sources, and Lionsgate executives have made their pick.

The Hollywood Reporter also wonders about the state of screenplay for ‘Catching Fire’ as Francis Lawrence is not a writer unlike ‘The Hunger Games’ Gary Ross is both a writer and a director.

Lawrence’s selection raises the question of the state of the Catching Fire screenplay. Ross, who is a writer as much as he is a director, worked on the Hunger Games script and was planning on spending two months honing Fire, working from a script penned by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire). The producers and the new director now will need to keep working with Beaufoy or hire new scribes to hammer out the script before shooting begins.

Francis Lawrence was one of the many names that were included in list Lionsgate reportedly compiled when Gary Ross left ‘The Hunger Games’ franchise. The first set of names includes Alfonso Cuarón (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Children of Men), David Cronenberg (The Fly, Cosmopolis) and Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel, Biutiful). Two more directors’ names were revealed to be included in Lionsgate’s list of consideration which includes possible candidates such as Bennett Miller (Moneyball) and also Francis Lawrence who is now reportedly to be Lionsgate’s choice.

Before directing ‘Water For Elephants’, ‘I Am Legend’ and ‘Constantine’, Francis Lawrence’s earlier works also consists of directing music videos for Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears and Green Day.

What do you think of Francis Lawrence as the director of ‘Catching Fire’? Tell us in the comments below your thoughts about it!

‘The Hunger Games’ Scores US$302.8M In USA, Tops Box Office For 3rd Weekend

Deadline reports ‘The Hunger Games’ has now crossed US$300 million mark, raking in a current total of US$302.8 million in USA box office sales and continues to top North American box office for the 3rd weekend in a row.

“The Hunger Games” remained the No. 1 movie in North America for the third weekend in a row, beating Universal’s new comedy “American Reunion” and clobbering the 3D re-release of “Titanic.”

In its third weekend of release, Lionsgate’s PG-13 “The Hunger Games” grossed $33.5 million. The R-rated “American Reunion,” the latest in Universal’s successful “American Pie” franchise, opened to a respectable $21.5 million. And “Titanic,” the PG-13 blockbuster first released in 1997, took $17.4 million.

The weekend pushed “The Hunger Games” over the $300 million mark domestically. The movie now has grossed $302.8 million.

“The Hunger Games” Could Open Bigger Than “Breaking Dawn” In USA Box Office

We had previously reported the first set of tracking records indicate “The Hunger Games” could open bigger than “Twilight” in USA box office sales.

New set of tracking record is in and Lionsgate marketing is evidently working for The Hollywood Reporter reports experts are now predicting “The Hunger Games” could possibly open bigger than “Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1” US $138.1 million debut back in November 2012.

This is certainly great news for do keep in mind when “Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1” was released, it had already established its fanbase which is unlike “The Hunger Games” where it’s the first movie of what could be the launch of a new franchise.

Here’s what The Hollywood Reporter has to say:

Hunger Games, which opens March 23, is even tracking better than The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1. That film opened in November to US$138.1 million, the fifth-best debut of all time domestically, but had the advantage of bowing the weekend before Thanksgiving, when some kids are out of school.

Box-office observers say it’s difficult to predict exactly how much Hunger Games will make, offering a more conservative estimate of US$100 million to US$120 million. They say it’s difficult to predict a number when tracking becomes this big and a film gets into the US$100 million-plus range.
Hunger Games certainly has a shot at taking the crown for best March opening from Alice in Wonderland, which debuted to US$116.1 million in 2010.

Tracking data released Monday showed definite interest in Hunger Games jumping from 55 percent to 60 percent in the past week, awareness went from 75 percent to 83 percent, unaided awareness from 14 percent to 21 percent and awareness from 75 percent to 83 percent.
“Numbers don’t get much higher than this,” said one rival studio executive. “Hunger Games is tracking like a sequel, even though it isn’t a sequel. It’s three times higher than the first Twilight.”

Interest among younger women in Hunger Games is now at 45 percent, compared with 36 percent for Breaking Dawn. Among female over the age of 25, interest is 29 percent, versus 27 percent for Breaking Dawn.

One advantage that Hunger Games has over Summit Entertainment’s blockbuster Twilight franchise is male interest.

Monday’s tracking showed that Interest in Hunger Games among males younger than 25 was a healthy 28 percent, compared to 10 percent for Breaking Dawn. Interest among males over 25 was 20 percent, versus 8 percent for the fourth Twilight film.

“These are huge, stupid numbers,” one box-office observer said.

Visit The Hollywood Reporter for the full story.

Outlook for “The Hunger Games” movie is certainly rosy and we can’t wait to see the numbers for “The Hunger Games” box office sales in USA, locally as well as worldwide!
