UPDATED: ‘The Hunger Games’ Continues To Dominate North American Box Office, Passes US$500M Global Cume

According to Deadline, ‘The Hunger Games’ continues to dominate North American box office for the 4th consecutive week. Besides that, the cumulative global box office grossing has surpassed US$500 million.

SATURDAY PM/SUNDAY AM, 5TH UPDATE: Overall the North American weekend looks to be down around -11% from last year which may make Hollywood nervous going into the all-important summer movie season starting in May after a super-heated 2012 first quarter. The difference in this weekend’s close finishes were a matter of MPAA ratings and theater counts with 22% of K-12 out of school Friday. Lionsgate’s PG13-rated The Hunger Games scored the most locations in the U.S. and Canada this weekend and beat its domestic competition for the 4th straight weekend. As of Sunday morning, its global cume is now a gargantuan $500+ million! Fox received its hoped-for Friday (#1 after matinees) and Saturday (+24%) family fare bumps for the Farrelly Brothers’ PG-rated The Three Stooges, which played in more runs than Lionsgate’s R-rated The Cabin In The Woods.

This is certainly great news for ‘The Hunger Games’ which is the first of ‘The Hunger Games’ franchise which is rare for a debut movie to do so fantastically well in box office. That’s not all of course.

UPDATE: According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Hunger Games’ has yet another amazing feat under its belt.

Lionsgate’s Hunger Games grossed $21.5 million, becoming the first film since James Cameron‘s Avatar to place at No. 1 for four consecutive weekends at the domestic box office and putting its total gross at $337.1 million. It has earned $531.1 globally, though its foreign run has been softer (similar to the firstTwilight).

‘The Hunger Games’, rated PG13, was released on 22 March 2012 and is now available in all cinemas islandwide.
