Woody Harrelson On His Interpretation Of Haymitch Abernathy And More With Hero Complex

Woody Harrelson had a recent interview with Los Angeles Times’s Hero Complex regarding his interpretation of playing that well loved drunk, Haymitch Abernathy, from ‘The Hunger Games’.

Woody Harrelson described how he had interpreted Haymitch Abernathyin ‘The Hunger Games’ as an effort to break away from the norm:

In the books, for instance, Haymitch is described as a paunchy, gone-to-seed middle-aged man with short, dark, curly hair, but Harrelson’s version looks more like Kurt Cobain’s fashion-conscious uncle. For the 50-year-old Harrelson, meanwhile, the Haymitch character might deliver a career-first; despite this era of ubiquitous sequels, the actor has never played the same character in two films. That will change if all goes as Lionsgate hopes and a four-film franchise can be made out of the three “Hunger Games” novels.

Lenny Kravitz as Cinna, Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark

Harrelson also went on to talk about his experience working with the staff on set of ‘The Hunger Games’:

“It’s good writing and it just keeps you on the edge,” Harrelson said. “And making [the movie] was a fun experience with just really cool people. I was really impressed by everybody that was associated with it. The look of everything is amazing too. The wardrobe is incredible and the makeup, the [stuff] they came up with is mind-blowing. The imagination behind the hair and the makeup and set decoration, it was just really impressive. It’s the work of brilliant people.”

LA Times 24 Frames: ‘The Hunger Games’ Is One Of The “Seven Stories To Watch”

24 Frames which is part of a blog under Los Angeles Times Entertainment, has listed out seven movies that will be released in 2012 which promises “even more juicy story lines”.

‘The Hunger Games’ is one of the seven movies listed:

Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen

‘Hunger’ pangs.“The Twilight Saga” will come to an end in 2012. But another popular genre-based young-adult series begins its march to the big screen on March 23, with Jennifer Lawrence inhabiting Suzanne Collins’ Katniss Everdeen. Fans will be watching the Gary Ross film carefully. So will the studio Lionsgate, which is eager to fill the void that Summit’s “Twilight” is leaving behind.

Visit 24 Frames to see which other 6 movies are listed and what they have to say about them.

Woody Harrelson Talks About Playing Haymitch In ‘The Hunger Games’

Woody Harrelson

Los Angeles Times 24 Frames had a short chat with Woody Harrelson, who will play Haymitch Abernathy in ‘The Hunger Games’, recently regarding his portrayal of Haymitch Abernathy.

“It was my objective to give the character as much comedy as I could without it seeming not to fit,” Harrelson told 24 Frames. “I tried to take a certain comedic aspect and give a sense, through that, that he’s been through a lot and is anesthetizing himself as a result of that.”

Harrelson said that, even when he was playing Haymitch straight, he tried to put a more original twist on the character, particularly when it came to his look. “I didn’t want it to feel like just because he’s an alcoholic that he would look just like any bum on the street. So there are things that go against your expectation of what a washed-up guy would look like,” he said, somewhat cryptically.

If you are worried about Lionsgate adaptation of ‘The Hunger Games’ like me and many of the rest of the fans, here’s what Woody Harrelson has to say on this matter.

“The essence of the book is going to be in the film,” Harrelson said, adding, “It’s something we’ve never seen before. We have the best wardrobe, the best costume people, the best makeup people. There’s a level of commitment to innovation that [filmgoers] have never seen. I think they’re going to be very pleasantly surprised by it.”

I’m certainly much more hyped up (if that’s even possible) to see him as Haymitch Abernathy after this interview!
