The Hunger Games

THE HUNGER GAMES MOVIE

THE SYNOPSIS

A dystopic Capitol requires its twelve subjugated districts to pay tribute in the form of a teenage boy and girl who are forced to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.  When Katniss Everdeen’s little sister is chosen in the lottery, Katniss volunteers to take her place.  Although persevering through hardship is commonplace for Katniss, she must start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love in order to win the games and return home.

THE HUNGER GAMES MOVIE ADAPTATION

On 17 March 2009, LIONSGATE® (NYSE: LGF), the leading next generation studio, announced that they had acquired worldwide distribution rights to the movie adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best selling futuristic young adult novel THE HUNGER GAMES. Suzanne Collins adapted the screenplay from her novel alongside veteran scriptwriter Billy Ray and The Hunger Games director Gary Ross.

Two years later, on 17 March 2011, it was announced that Academy Award® nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence had acquired the coveted role of Katniss Everdeen in the movie adaptation of The Hunger Games.

“Jennifer’s just an incredible actress.  So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave.  I never thought we’d find somebody this perfect for the role.  And I can’t wait for everyone to see her play it.” – Suzanne Collins

“Katniss requires a young actress with strength, depth, complexity, tenderness, and power. There are very few people alive who can bring that to a role.  Jen brings it in spades. She’s going to be an amazing Katniss.” –  Gary Ross

On 4 April 2011, it was announced that actor Josh Hutcherson had been cast as Peeta Mellark, who is Katniss Everdeen’s  fellow tribute in The 74th Annual Hunger Games, and actor Liam Hemsworth had been cast as Gale Hawthorne, who is Katniss Everdeen’s best friend.

The Hunger Games movie also stars Elizabeth Banks as Katniss and Peeta’s vivacious and bubbly escort, Effie Trinket, as well as veteran actors Woody Harrelson as a drunken former Victor of The Hunger Games, and Donald Sutherland as President Snow, the President of Panem.
